Samal set for 5150 Islands Series finale

SAMAL CITY — Champions will be crowned Sept. 20 as the inaugural 5150 Triathlon Islands of the Philippines Series culminates on Samal Island, where athletes will face the final test of a four-leg endurance challenge spanning some of the country’s most scenic island destinations.

The Damosa Land 5150 Triathlon finale will follow the familiar 5150 format of a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride, and a 10-kilometer run.

Beyond being the final stop on the calendar, the Samal race caps a series designed to test athletes across varied island courses while highlighting the growing appeal of triathlon in the Philippines.

The series opened in Guimaras in March, moved to Camiguin in May, continued in Bohol, and now heads to Samal for its fourth and final leg.

While the race format remains consistent, each destination presents athletes with a distinct mix of terrain, weather, roads, and race-day conditions.

That variety is central to the challenge, requiring athletes to adapt from one island course to the next while maintaining the endurance, consistency, and race-day execution needed to contend for the series crown.

Samal offers a fitting stage for the finale with its coastal scenery and established tourism infrastructure.

The island hosted the Damosa Land 5150 Triathlon for the first time in 2025, when Eryk Omandam and Natasha Doromal-Lim captured the men’s and women’s overall titles, respectively.

The return of the event, along with defending champions Omandam and Doromal-Lim, gives athletes another opportunity to race on Samal while strengthening the island’s emerging profile as an endurance-sports destination.

Organized by Sunrise Events Inc., the series has provided Filipino triathletes with opportunities to compete in different parts of the country while attracting athletes from outside their home regions.

For competitors, the circuit combines competition with travel while making each stop a new test of preparation and adaptability.

The four-leg format also reflects the growing depth of the Philippine triathlon scene.

Rather than staging a single stand-alone race, the Islands of the Philippines Series connects multiple destinations through one sporting concept, giving athletes an incentive to follow the circuit from one island to another.

Triathlon is particularly suited to that approach because its courses bring competitors beyond traditional sporting venues and directly into the communities and environments hosting the races.

Athletes swim along coastlines, cycle through local roads and communities, and complete their runs against the backdrop of each destination.

That connection between competition and location has helped make triathlon part of the country’s broader sports-tourism strategy.

Backed by the Philippine Sports Commission and supported by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, the series forms part of efforts by the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Committee to strengthen the Philippines’ position as a destination for major sporting events.

The committee was established under Administrative Order No. 38 in 2025 to coordinate government efforts in developing, promoting, and hosting domestic and international sports-tourism events.

For the athletes lining up in Samal, however, the immediate focus will be on competition.

The finale gives the field one last opportunity to test months of training on a demanding swim-bike-run course, with every transition, tactical decision, and kilometer potentially affecting the final standings.

After four races across four islands, the 5150 Triathlon Islands of the Philippines Series will come down to one final course, one final test, and the athletes who can deliver their best performances with the championship on the line.
