BACOLOD City – Mayor Alfredo Marañon of Sagay City, Negros Occidental challenged the new scholars of the Alfredo G. Marañon Jr. Scholarship Program to hurdle all challenges they face to achieve their dreams in life.
In a general assembly held Friday at Balay Kauswagan, Marañon said that the scholars should always get the opportunity to study, “especially that we are now in these trying times.”
“It is our willpower to hurdle these trying times. We need to persevere and adjust. We need to be grateful that we are here and alive and have this opportunity,” he stressed.
The mayor added that he hopes to look forward to the day that they will achieve their dreams and graduate.
The Alfredo G. Marañon Jr. Scholarship Program has been running in the last 11 years since 2008, with nearly 4,500 scholars and 612 graduates.
Marañon said the low percentage of graduates was attributed to failure of some scholars to comply with the minimum grade requirements, changing of course, while others stopped going to school, especially the alternative learning students.
Mayor Marañon also shared that for the last two months LGU and DepEd have been going around schools distributing school supplies, especially to the far-flung areas.
He encouraged the scholars to “not to let this opportunity pass.” He also urged the parents and guardians to support their children during this academic undertaking.
City Planning and Development Office head Engr. Maricon Lonzaga said not all local governments have scholarship programs, hence, she appealed to all scholars to take the scholarship seriously.
She said this is only for Sagaynons that is why requirements are strict.
375 scholars enlisted in the program for this school-year in the following courses: BS in Engineering, BS in Civil Engineering, BS in Mechanical Engineering, BS in Chemical Engineering, BS in Electrical Engineering, BS in Education, BS in Veterinary Medicine, BS in Accountancy, BS in Nursing, Midwifery, BS in Agriculture, BS in Fisheries.
Indigenous group members and ALS passers can take any course and enroll in any school in Sagay City.
