BACOLOD City – The City Legal Enforcement Team here has intensified the campaign against selling of refilled butane canisters this holiday season citing safety concerns.
At least six sacks of refilled butane canisters were confiscated by the team during their inspection at Burgos Public Market last Thursday.
Rey Demisana, head of the enforcement team, said these canisters were refilled with Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) which is dangerous, considering that most of the canisters were already old.
During the operation, Demisana said that there was minor resistance from some sellers, but it was handled peacefully.
“Ka delikado, iban ga sungaw, gapanimaho (It’s very dangerous, some are already leaking and smelling),” he added.
These canisters are not the same as branded butane canisters that are sealed.
Demisana said they have previously conducted operations against this, but there are still some who continue to sell them.
He said they have yet to conduct an inventory on the confiscated items, as their operation is ongoing in other markets, including satellite markets.
The enforcement team plans to tap the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) for the disposal of the canisters.
