Ryan Garcia announces welterweight title fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Another revelation has shaken up boxing’s already eventful year-end.
In a social media post on Oct. 22, 2026, World Boxing Council champion Ryan Garcia announced an upcoming welterweight title fight with retired legend Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“Just got off the phone with Floyd Mayweather,” Garcia posted on social media, sharing a screenshot of their video call.
“Talking about fighting. It’s real, and he wants to do a real fight at 147 (pounds). He and I both agreed to post this! Let’s rumble.”
Speculation about the fight began two weeks ago when Garcia claimed that Mayweather had challenged him to a fight, a claim the boxing icon’s camp has yet to confirm.
Before these online claims, no serious fight negotiations or talks had taken place between the two camps, as Garcia was still fresh from defending his WBC welterweight belt against Conor Benn and Mayweather Jr. remained embroiled in legal controversies.
Mayweather Jr. was supposed to fight Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao in a long-awaited rematch on Sept. 25, 2026, but the showdown was postponed indefinitely because of the American’s legal troubles.
The decision came after CSI Sports, the event company that had an agreement with Mayweather for the exclusive rights to promote the rematch, filed a federal lawsuit seeking to recover USD 4.65 million.
CSI Sports claimed it made advance payments to the undefeated boxing superstar to promote the Pacquiao rematch and a Mike Tyson exhibition scheduled for April 25, 2026, neither of which materialized.
Aside from the CSI Sports controversy, Mayweather was also accused by American social media influencer Logan Paul of failing to pay fees owed from their 2021 exhibition bout.
As of this writing, Mayweather has yet to comment publicly on Garcia’s claim that the two have reached a deal.
“This will be for the 147 WBC world championship I made that very clear and Floyd and I agreed to fight,” Garcia added.
