Roxas City provides relief to Barangay 8 fire victims

ROXAS CITY, Capiz — The city government provided relief assistance Monday, Sept. 14, to residents whose homes were destroyed by fire Sunday morning, Sept. 13, in Sitio Avenue Mart, Barangay 8.
Each affected resident received assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), including family food packs, sleeping kits, hygiene kits and kitchen kits, distributed through the City Social Welfare and Development Office, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and barangay officials.
The city government expressed sadness over the fire, which came a day after about 12 families from Sitio Looban moved into new homes in Tanzaville, Barangay Tanza, Roxas City. Those families lost their homes in a fire on July 25.
Eleven structures, including two karaoke bars, were damaged in Sunday’s fire on Plaridel Street in Barangay 8.
Barangay Chairperson Holce Bialen said 44 people were affected and one person was injured.
The affected residents were identified as Myrna Diestro, Ofelia Gregorio, Francisco Alberto, Roberto Alberto, Mary Jane Fernandez, Marlon Denosta, Joenil Alparaque, Johndy Diestro and Isidro Bialen.
Two restaurant-bars owned by Emma Aguilar and Hervias Silda were also affected.
Senior Fire Officer 2 Junemar Galve of the Bureau of Fire Protection’s Roxas City Fire Station said the blaze started at a boardinghouse owned by Aguilar and quickly spread to nearby homes.
Galve placed the initial damage estimate at about PHP 99,000.
Some affected families are staying with relatives, while others are temporarily sheltered at the barangay day care center.
Bialen said the residents remained hopeful after receiving relief assistance from the barangay.
Fire investigators are determining the cause and full extent of the damage from the blaze, which started at about 6 a.m.
Local governments serve as first responders during disasters, while the DSWD provides additional relief supplies and technical support to help meet affected residents’ needs.
