Roxas City fire razes 11 homes

ROXAS CITY, Capiz — A fire razed 11 houses, including three boarding houses, and caused an estimated PHP 120,000 in property damage at Sitio Looban on Plaridel Street in Barangay 8 on Saturday morning, July 25.
Senior Fire Officer 1 Junemar Galve, public information officer of the Bureau of Fire Protection-Roxas City Fire Station, said 10 houses were destroyed and another was partially damaged.
Galve said the fire station received the alarm at about 8:51 a.m. and immediately deployed personnel to the area.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 9:37 a.m. and declared it extinguished at 10:03 a.m.
About 12 firetrucks from nearby fire stations responded to the incident.
Barangay 8 Chair Holce Bialen said he was saddened by the plight of residents who lost their homes.
The displaced residents temporarily stayed at the barangay day care center and multipurpose hall.
Bialen said about 50 residents were affected by the fire.
Many of the houses were made of light materials, allowing the flames to spread quickly.
An initial investigation by the BFP indicated that an unattended blower in one of the houses may have started the fire.
Two volunteer firefighters suffered minor injuries while responding to the blaze, according to reports.
Personnel from the City Social Welfare and Development Office, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and Department of Social Welfare and Development went to the area to assist the affected families.
The families received food packs, shelter kits, sleeping kits, kitchen kits and hygiene kits.
Former 1Tahanan party-list Rep. Nathaniel “Nat” Oducado also visited the evacuation center.
Oducado gave a sack of rice and groceries to the affected families.
The city government pledged additional assistance to the displaced residents.
Among the affected residents were Cristita Liniza, Roland Malejana, Pedro Guerrero, Isidia Villanueva, Frances Base, Joesal Nato and Adelina Delgado.
Arson investigators are working to determine the fire’s cause and the total extent of the damage.
