Reported rape cases in Western Visayas drop 28%
By Jennifer P. Rendon

ILOILO CITY — Reported rape cases in Western Visayas declined by nearly 28% from Jan. 1 to Oct. 15, 2026, compared with the same period last year, according to the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).
Police records showed that reported cases dropped to 264 from 366 during the same period in 2025, representing a reduction of 102 cases, or 27.87%.
The figures reflect incidents reported to police and do not necessarily represent the total number of rape incidents in the region.
Five of the region’s six police units recorded decreases, with the Iloilo Police Provincial Office posting the largest decline at 45.81%, equivalent to 82 fewer reported cases.
The Capiz Police Provincial Office followed with a 36.21% decrease, while Guimaras recorded a 15.38% decline.
The Aklan Police Provincial Office registered a 12.77% reduction, while Antique posted a 2.38% decrease.
Although the decline is encouraging, PRO-6 Regional Director Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said police continue to give attention to every report and remain committed to providing appropriate assistance to those who come forward.
“Every report matters because behind every case is someone who may need help. That’s why we continue to make sure that our police officers are ready to listen and respond,” he added.
Tuaño also urged victims and witnesses to report incidents to the nearest police station or Women and Children Protection Desk if they need assistance.
“Don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to listen, assist, and help you through the process,” he added.
Under Republic Act 8505, or the Rape Victim Assistance and Protection Act of 1998, victims are entitled to assistance, including access to counseling, medical services and legal support.
The law also requires police stations to maintain women’s desks to assist female rape victims during investigations.
Emergency assistance may also be requested through the national emergency hotline, 911.
Parents, guardians and community members are likewise encouraged to promote safe and supportive environments for children and promptly seek assistance whenever concerns arise about their safety and welfare.
