The rehabilitation of Buntatala Creek in Leganes, Iloilo is almost completed, according to OIC-District Engineer Mario G. Soriano of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office.
Soriano said the flood control project is already more than 90 percent accomplished and is expected to be completed in June 2020 amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
“We make sure that the construction activities would go on and be completed as scheduled despite the scare of the virus, however, we ensure that the health and safety of our workers are given due attention such as wearing of mask and other protective gears, and not allowing them to move or go beyond the worksite,” Soriano said.
The 4.8-kilometer Buntatala Creek rehabilitation project, which costs P27.93 million and funded by the district’s 2019 Local Infrastructure Project allocation, involves the clearing and grubbing, and restoration/rebuilding of earth slopes at the right bank of the creek.
It also involves the construction of a 324-meter concrete revetment wall to prevent water overflow and waterway obstruction.
It will benefit the residents of barangays Buntatala, Guinobatan, Cari Mayor, Cari Minor and Guihaman.
“This flood control project aims to protect the lives and properties of the people living near the creek, especially from the impact of flood when heavy rains occur,” Soriano said.
He added that the project would help prevent soil erosion and block influx of water, protecting the agricultural products and livelihood of the people.
Meantime, Soriano stressed that public consultation with the officials and residents of the affected communities was undertaken prior to the start of the project for its smooth implementation. (DPWH-6/RPAIO)
