The number of registered births in Guimaras in the first three months of 2021 (Q1) plunged by more than half compared to the same period last year.
Data from the Decentralized Vital Statistics System (DVSS) of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) indicated 678 registered births in Q1 2021, which is 54.59 percent lower compared to 1,493 in Q1 2020.
The Q1 2021 figure is also lower than Q1 2019 with 788 registered births.
Female registered births outnumbered the males in three comparative quarters with a gender gap of 6.78, 11.08, and 3.30 percentage points for the first quarter of 2021, 2020, and 2019, respectively.

Of the 678 registered live births by the usual residence of mother in Q1 2021, more than half (53.39%) were females and 46.61 percent were males or a gender gap of 6.78 percent. The sex ratio of 87 males to every 100 females is higher than the ratio in Q1 2020 at 80 males to every 100 females.
“Monthly, the first two months of 2021 registered more female live births than males while March recorded more female registrants with a sex ratio of 106 males to every 100 females,” Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare said.
Compared to the first three months of 2020, registered live births were female-dominated. The large gender gap was seen in February at 16.75 percent or a sex ratio of 71 males to every 100 females, followed by January with a gender gap of 13.81 percent or a sex ratio of 76 males to every 100 females.
The narrowest gender gap was observed in March 2020 at 1.62 percent, or a sex ratio of 97 males to every 100 females.
“On average, registered live births were dominated by females in Q1 2020 with a sex ratio of 80 males to every 100 females,” Losare added.
