Record IRONKIDS field opens Lapu-Lapu race weekend

LAPU-LAPU City — Before the world’s elite triathletes battle for IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu honors on Sunday, the spotlight will first belong to the sport’s youngest stars.

A record 657 participants will converge at the Beachfront of Dusit Thani Mactan on Saturday, Aug. 8, making RLC Residences IRONKIDS Lapu-Lapu the largest IRONKIDS event ever staged in the Philippines.

The historic turnout sets a new benchmark for the country’s premier youth triathlon series and underscores the rapid growth of grassroots multisport development. It also highlights the increasing enthusiasm of Filipino children to embrace triathlon, with the event officially opening the IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu race weekend and transforming Mactan into a celebration of the sport across generations.

Young athletes ages 6 to 15 will compete in the aquathlon, or swim-run, and kids run events, with participants coming from Lapu-Lapu City and neighboring cities and provinces.

The record field reflects IRONKIDS’ continuing success as a platform where beginners experience the thrill of racing while more seasoned youngsters sharpen their competitive edge.

One of the biggest stories heading into the event is the strong presence of Sidlak Bagani, Lapu-Lapu City’s flagship youth triathlon development program, which will field 65 young athletes—one of the largest organized contingents in the race.

The initiative is a collaboration among the Lapu-Lapu City government, Sunrise Events Inc., IRONKIDS and local sports stakeholders, providing free triathlon training to children ages 6 to 15 while promoting discipline, resilience, confidence and healthy lifestyles.

The swim-run events feature age-appropriate distances, with competitors ages 6 to 8 racing a 150-meter swim and 1-kilometer run, the 9-10 division covering a 150-meter swim and 1.5-kilometer run, and the 11-12 category taking on a 250-meter swim and 1.5-kilometer run.

The oldest division, ages 13 to 15, will tackle a 250-meter swim followed by a challenging 2-kilometer run. Relay races will also be held, with the 11-15 category covering a 250-meter swim and 1.5-kilometer run, and the 6-10 division racing over a 150-meter swim and 1-kilometer run.

The excitement began Friday with the Reyna Bulakna Run, which attracted a record turnout of more than 1,000 participants and highlighted the growing community support for the IRONMAN festival in Lapu-Lapu City.

The weekend culminates Sunday, Aug. 9, with two marquee races. The Sunrise Sprint offers newcomers an accessible introduction to multisport through a 750-meter swim, 25-kilometer bike ride and 5-kilometer run, while the IRONMAN 70.3 Lapu-Lapu features 17 elite professionals racing over the demanding 1.9-kilometer swim, 90-kilometer bike and 21-kilometer run course.

Defending men’s champion Henri Schoeman returns to defend his crown, while Olympian Natalie Van Coevorden headlines the women’s field in what promises to be another world-class showdown.
