BACOLOD CITY — The Roselyn Jean Pelle Command of the New People’s Army claimed responsibility for killing two alleged military informants in Negros Occidental on Friday.
The communist rebel group released a weekend statement confirming its Special Partisan Unit orchestrated the separate attacks in Barangay 11, Victorias City.
The New People’s Army is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, which has waged a decades-long Maoist insurgency across the country.
The victims, identified only as 59-year-old Jerome and 58-year-old Alex, were fatally shot at their respective workplaces.
Assassins killed Jerome near his workplace just 30 minutes before gunmen fatally shot Alex at a local poultry farm.
Rebels accused Jerome of orchestrating the deaths of 10 guerrillas during a deadly April 19 military encounter in Toboso that left 19 people dead.
Authorities previously arrested Jerome alongside four others in Talisay City on April 22 during a manhunt operation connected to the Toboso clash.
He allegedly served as a getaway driver for wanted individuals during that police operation.
Prosecutors charged Jerome with obstruction of justice for harboring criminal offenders, but he secured his temporary liberty by posting bail.
Police clarified that Jerome was not an active combatant but allegedly operated as an underground contact for the rebel network.
Meanwhile, the rebel group stated that Alex joined their armed struggle during the 1980s before eventually leaving the movement.
The insurgents accused Alex of guiding state forces during military operations in Barangay Gawahon, Victorias City, and Barangay San Isidro, E.B. Magalona.
Alex also reportedly worked for an unnamed politician and wealthy landowner in northern Negros.
Police records confirmed that Alex had formally surrendered to authorities to officially abandon the communist insurgency.
The rebel group issued a warning that it will continue its armed campaign to fight for the oppressed and punish those who have done wrong.
Local police are currently conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances and finalize the official motive behind the twin assassinations.
