The Rotary Club of Bacolod held the groundbreaking ceremony of three proposed classroom buildings at Sitio Laos, Brgy. Binobohan, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental last Aug. 13, 2023.
The groundbreaking was led by Past District Governor Edgar Sy, Hope President Michelle Medrano, Past President & Club Director for Service Projects Pauline Cuaycong, Past President & Club Secretary Frederick Anthony de Leon, Past President & Protocol Officer Jose Glenn de Guzman, Rotarians Sonrissa Fabelena and Mary Joy Malunes, Asst. Secretary Emily Cuaycong.
Also present were Dr. Orlando Cadano, Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division Superintendent; Mr. Rommel Villahermoso, DepEd Assistant Schools Divsion Superintendent, Punong Barangay Elmer Catong and other barangay officials, health workers, volunteers and parents, teachers of Laos Elementary School headed by Ms. Elnora Undang, Ms. Precila Cabuguason, Ms. Arsena Epan, Mr. Ricky Rellen and Ms. Joan Vejano; TSgt. Alfonso Olimpos and the 62IB of the Philippine Army, and project coordinator and teacher Amy Carbero.
In their keynote messages, Past District Governor Edgar Sy, Hope President Michelle Medrano, Dr. Orlando Cadano, and Punong Barangay Elmer Catong reiterated that education is a right and not a privilege, thus it is important to have good education for a better future and poverty alleviation.
In addition to having qualified and passionate teachers, studying in an environment that is conducive to learning is the key to quality education.
Around 200 pupils will benefit from the proposed classroom buildings that will include a Kindergarten room, Children’s Library, Computer Laboratory and Office.
This project is in line with Rotary International’s Area of Focus in Basic Education and Literacy.
