After a stellar outing during the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers in Angeles, Gilas Pilipinas star swingman Dwight Ramos will most likely sit out when they play in Belgrade, Serbia.
Ramos was earlier diagnosed with a groin injury that kept him on the sidelines during the tune-up game against China two weeks ago.
“Dwight has already said to me that he wants to try, but he is just in no shape to try,” said Gilas program director and head coach Tab Baldwin.
The Ateneo Blue Eagles forward was one of Gilas’ bright spots during the FIBA Asia Cup with back-to-back impressive performances against the mighty Korean team.
Ramos averaged 13.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 2 steals during the tournament that helped the Philippines reach an undefeated record in their three-game span and claim the top spot in their group.
“Dwight is not likely for either game. But things can change overnight. But with a groin, it is not common, usually these things drag on and that is what we seem to be experiencing,” added Baldwin.
The young Gilas team is currently in Serbia to compete for the 2021 Olympic Qualifying Tournament and was grouped with Dominican Republic and the host team.
Aside from the banged-up Ramos, young power forward Carl Tamayo is also recovering from an ankle sprain and is hoping to get back on track and join the team.
“We are limping and these are key players. But we know that this is a once a lifetime opportunity. I know that they’re going to go out there. If they can give their best, that is what they’re going to give,” closed Baldwin.
