PVL Siklab race heats up as Foxies, Chargers clash

Games Tuesday, Oct. 27
(Ninoy Aquino Stadium)
1 p.m. – Akari vs. Farm Fresh
3:30 p.m. – AFP vs. VNS (Spikers’ Turf)
6 p.m. – Choco Mucho vs. Galeries Tower
The race for the four semifinal berths is shaping up as a wide-open battle early in the tournament, with all nine teams still in contention in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference Siklab Series, leaving little room for complacency as the preliminary-round race gathers momentum.
With every win carrying greater weight and every set potentially proving decisive, Farm Fresh and Akari seek to build momentum from recent victories when they collide Tuesday, Oct. 27, while Choco Mucho tries to reignite its campaign against winless Galeries Tower in a rare triple-header at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.
The Chargers and the Foxies kick off the PVL action at 1 p.m., followed by the lone Spikers’ Turf match between AFP and VNS at 3:30 p.m.
The Flying Titans then take on the Highrisers at 6 p.m.
The Manila venue last hosted a PVL match in March, when Akari edged Choco Mucho in a dramatic five-set encounter.
This time, the two squads return on separate missions, each looking to make a statement as the battle for semifinal positioning intensifies.
Akari and Farm Fresh head into their showdown on the heels of contrasting but timely victories.
The Chargers finally broke through after an early two-game skid, sweeping the PLDT High Speed Hitters last week, while the Foxies delivered one of the conference’s most impressive comebacks by overturning a two-set deficit to stun the previously unbeaten Flying Titans, 15-13, in the deciding set.
For Akari, the straight-sets triumph over PLDT offered a much-needed lift after a shutout loss to Creamline and a heartbreaking five-set defeat to Capital1.
But the Chargers face a tougher test against a Farm Fresh side brimming with confidence after its stirring comeback against Choco Mucho.
The Foxies, however, are keen to break their early win-loss-win pattern and establish a more consistent rhythm as they strengthen their bid for a coveted semifinal spot.
The stakes are high in a tournament where the top four teams after the single-round elimination phase advance to the semifinals, with the top two earning twice-to-beat advantages.
With the field tightly packed, every match and potentially every set could shape the final standings, particularly if teams end up tied.
The Siklab Series is the first of three stages in the PVL’s revamped All-Filipino Conference, with the succeeding Sigla and Sinag series leading to the Philippine Grand Championship.
Farm Fresh has shown that it has the depth and firepower to challenge the league’s established contenders.
Four Foxies reached double figures in their upset of Choco Mucho, underscoring the balanced attack that has made the team a dangerous opponent.
The durable Mylene Paat-Rezanova led the charge with 15 points, while reigning league MVP Trisha Tubu chipped in 14.
Royse Tubino added 12 points, compensating for veteran ace Ces Molina’s struggles, as the latter finished with just three.
Rookie Jonna Perdido also came through with 11 points, including crucial hits in the pressure-packed finish, further highlighting the Foxies’ blend of veteran poise and youthful energy.
That balanced offensive effort could prove decisive against an Akari squad that has the individual talent to go toe-to-toe with the league’s best but is still searching for greater consistency across its roster.
“I think sa akin, yung mindset ko ay suportahan kami sa bawat isa so kung sinong ipasok sa amin, kung sino ipasok ni coach kailangan support namin yung bawat isa,” Paat said.
Only Eli Soyud scored in double figures in Akari’s win over PLDT, leaving plenty of room for key hitters Faith Nisperos, Grethcel Soltones, Ivy Lacsina, Fifi Sharma, Ced Domingo and Jyne Soreño to make their presence felt.
If Akari can get more contributors going offensively, the Chargers could turn Tuesday’s encounter into another fiercely contested battle in a series that has produced its share of unpredictable results in the opening weeks.
“Siguro more on maging consistent when it comes to receiving, passing, and syempre hindi dapat mawawala ‘yung leadership. Even if may nagkakamali, it’s normal, wala namang perfect na player so I think one thing ‘yun na kailangan i-look forward pa lagi,” said Akari team captain Justine Jazareno.
Meanwhile, Choco Mucho is eager to get back on track after letting a commanding position slip away against Farm Fresh, with Galeries Tower presenting an opportunity to regain its footing.
The Flying Titans had looked poised to extend their winning run after taking the first two sets against the Foxies, only to unravel down the stretch and absorb a painful two-point loss in the fifth.
The setback exposed the need to sustain their intensity when matches reach decisive moments.
Led by the explosive duo of Sisi Rondina-Rosales and Eya Laure, Choco Mucho will look to turn that disappointment into motivation against the struggling Highrisers.
Kat Tolentino, Caitlyn Viray, Des Cheng, Isa Molde, Lorraine Pecaña, Jen Villegas and Jaila Atienza give the Flying Titans additional options as they seek to reassert themselves in the semifinal chase.
Galeries Tower, meanwhile, is still searching for answers after dropping its first three matches, managing only two set victories along the way.
The Highrisers have struggled to find their rhythm following the departure of several key players during the offseason, leaving the retooled squad with a difficult adjustment period in a highly competitive field.
Still, the Highrisers remain determined to prove they belong and turn their early struggles into an opportunity for improvement.
Shola Alvarez, Aiza Pontillas, Gayle Pascual, Jean Asis, Ann Asis, Roselle Baliton, Camille Victoria, Lycha Ebon and Erika Deloria will be out to deliver a breakthrough performance and finally put the team in the win column.
In a race where no team can afford to fall too far behind, the chase for the final four is heating up, and every point is beginning to matter even more.
