PVL On Tour brings stars closer to fans

The long wait for elite women’s volleyball ends Wednesday as the Premier Volleyball League launches its much-anticipated PVL On Tour in Ilagan City, Isabela, a preseason showcase that brings the country’s premier league closer to fans in the provinces and ushers in what could be its most unpredictable season yet.

For the first time in years, virtually every club enters the tournament believing it has a legitimate shot at contending for the championship.

The recent draft, aggressive offseason recruiting, and months of preparation have narrowed the gap between contenders and challengers, creating a level playing field where every match carries weight and every victory must be earned.

That makes the seven-leg On Tour more than a preseason spectacle.

It serves as an early measuring stick for teams eager to gauge their progress, build chemistry, and send a strong message before the official season begins.

For fans outside Metro Manila, the tour is equally significant.

Instead of waiting for the league to come to television screens, supporters in volleyball-rich provinces will get the opportunity to watch the country’s biggest stars and rising talents live in their own hometowns.

The opening doubleheader captures that competitive balance, with four evenly matched squads looking to make an early statement.

ZUS Coffee, which endured a difficult All-Filipino Conference campaign after injuries sidelined several key players en route to a last-place finish, hopes to turn the page immediately against an Akari side equally determined to bounce back after placing sixth.

The Thunderbelles welcome back ace middle blocker AC Miner from injury to reinforce a squad led by Thea Gagate, Jovelyn Gonzaga, Chinnie Arroyo, Fiola Ceballos, Jolina dela Cruz, Riza Nogales, Cess Robles, Chai Troncoso, Kate Santiago, and ace setter Cloanne Mondonedo.

Akari arrives with a formidable core bannered by Ivy Lacsina, Fifi Sharma, Grethcel Soltones, Ced Domingo, and Eli Soyud.

Faith Nisperos is expected to return alongside newcomers Ann Monares, Sharya Ancheta, and Risa Sato, giving the Chargers one of their deepest lineups in recent memory.

Their duel at 4 p.m. sets the stage for an even bigger attraction at 6:30 p.m., when recent All-Filipino champion Creamline opens another campaign against an Nxled squad eager to prove that its disappointing fifth-place finish is already a thing of the past.

Despite assembling one of the league’s most talented rosters last conference, Nxled struggled to develop the chemistry needed to challenge for the title.

Coach Ettore Guidetti believes that has changed after months of uninterrupted training.

“As usual it’s difficult because Creamline has a bunch of combinations, a bunch of possibilities to play, so we will try to summarize as much as we can. We are in a good moment. The team is playing good day after day after day. We are trying to automatize the new players. So let’s see if we can give a good performance against the champions,” said Guidetti.

Brooke Van Sickle, Myla Pablo, and MJ Phillips remain the Chameleons’ foundation.

Lyann de Guzman, Ranya Musa, Aduke Ogunsanya, Chiara Permentilla, Jonah Escamillan, Jovelyn Fernandez, Jackie Acuña, and veteran setter Gel Cayuna provide the depth Nxled hopes will finally translate into consistent winning volleyball.

Still, every road to the championship continues to pass through Creamline.

Fresh off their 11th title conquest, the Cool Smashers retained the league’s most decorated core led by Jema Galanza, Tots Carlos, Alyssa Valdez, Pangs Panaga, Bea de Leon, Jia de Guzman, and Kyle Negrito.

Creamline also strengthened an already loaded roster with Dona Paralejas, Erin Pangilinan, Ishie Lalongisip, and rookie standout Barbie Jamili.

“Medyo mas matagal ata ’yung preparation ngayon. Wala kaming camp or anything but medyo ilang months din nakapag-training ’yung buong team for the PVL On Tour and very excited kasi may mga bago kami – sila Erin, si Dona – for this conference,” Valdez said.

After the opener in Isabela, the league heads to Batangas City on Saturday before making stops in Vigan, Polomolok, Santiago City, and Lanao del Norte.

The final leg is set Aug. 22 at a venue still to be announced.

The weekend-heavy schedule is designed to allow teams ample recovery from travel while giving more fans the opportunity to watch matches live.

Batangas will feature Galeries Tower against Farm Fresh at 4 p.m. before Choco Mucho battles ZUS Coffee at 6:30 p.m.

Capital1 and defending champion PLDT will make their On Tour debuts in Vigan, where the Solar Spikers face Nxled and the High Speed Hitters take on the Flying Titans.

To keep every contest meaningful, each winning team receives PHP 100,000, while the losing side still pockets PHP 50,000.

The league has also introduced innovations designed to maximize player development and enhance fan entertainment.

All 14 players on each team’s roster must see action before the end of the second set, guaranteeing meaningful exposure for every athlete.

The return of the strategic Premier Ball, worth two points on a successfully won rally, adds another layer of excitement and tactical decision-making.

National team athletes who are officially representing the Philippines or participating in national team activities will remain unavailable for On Tour matches, underscoring the league’s continued support for the country’s international program.

With strengthened rosters, renewed ambitions, and parity perhaps at an all-time high, the PVL On Tour promises far more than a preseason exhibition.

It marks the beginning of what could be the league’s most wide-open championship race yet, one that now belongs not only to the traditional powerhouses but also to every club determined to seize its moment and to provincial fans finally getting a front-row seat to the country’s biggest volleyball spectacle.
