Thousands of firearms have been voluntarily surrendered to different police units as the Police Regional Office 6 intensifies its campaign against loose firearms.
From 2019 to the present, PRO-6 has accounted for 3,683 surrendered firearms across Western Visayas.
Of the number, 3,429 are in the custody of different police offices, while 254 are with the Regional Forensic Unit 6.
Based on the PRO-6 inventory, the Aklan Police Provincial Office has custody of 862 firearms, while 116 are with the RFU-6.
The Antique Police Provincial Office has accounted for 1,236 firearms; Capiz Police Provincial Office, 175; Guimaras Police Provincial Office, 37; Iloilo Police Provincial Office, 959; Iloilo City Police Office, 39; and Regional Mobile Force Battalion 6, 121.
Another 138 firearms from the Iloilo City Police Office are with the RFU-6.
Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño, Western Visayas police chief, presented the firearms Monday, June 29.
The presentation came on the heels of the Philippine National Police national headquarters’ recognition of PRO-6’s campaign against loose firearms.
Col. Adrian Acollador, PRO-6 Regional Operations Division chief, said the campaign is driven by the successful conduct of Enhanced Managing Police Operations.
Acollador said the campaign also includes Tokhang Kontra Armas Luthang, or TKAL, and the Armas Baylo Bugas project.
Launched in November 2019, TKAL was previously known as Tokhang Kontra Guinadili-an nga Pusil before it was renamed Revitalized Katok.
The initiative is anchored on the objective of accounting for loose firearms and firearms with expired licenses.
For Tuaño, the voluntary surrender of firearms is more than just part of the campaign against loose firearms.
“This also means that we are able to prevent a crime before it happened. Around 20 to 30 percent of these loose firearms might be used in the commission of crimes,” he said.
Col. Romeo Galgo Jr., Regional Civil Security Unit 6 chief, said the firearms will be demilitarized through the Firearms, Explosives and Ammunition Disposal Committee.
RCSU-6 records showed that there are about 2,816 expired individual firearms licenses, including those held by members of law enforcement agencies.
The unit also recorded 789 expired juridical licenses, including those issued to local government units.
