PRO-6, DepEd bring Unified 911 lessons to schools

ILOILO CITY — The Police Regional Office 6 has teamed up with the Department of Education to bring awareness of the country’s Unified 911 emergency hotline to elementary schools across Western Visayas.

PRO-6 Regional Director Police Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said the police are working with DepEd Region 6 to bring the Unified 911 advocacy campaign directly to schools.
Unified 911 wristbands and information, education, and communication materials will be distributed to learners and school communities as part of the campaign.
The initiative aims to help children and school personnel understand when to call 911, what information to provide during an emergency, and how the hotline can connect callers with immediate assistance.
Ahead of the rollout, PRO-6’s Regional Community Affairs and Development Division convened community affairs units and Regional Police Strategy Management Teams from across Western Visayas on Sept. 15.
The meeting was intended to ensure that the campaign would be carried out simultaneously and in coordination with participating schools.
PRO-6 officials also met with DepEd Region 6 representatives to coordinate the campaign in Iloilo City.
DepEd expressed support for the initiative and is expected to issue guidance to concerned school officials to facilitate its implementation.
“This is a simple but important lesson that we want our children to learn early: when there is a real emergency, they should know how to call for help. By bringing the Unified 911 message into our schools, we are helping build a community that is more informed and more prepared,” Tuaño said.
Tuaño also reminded the public to help protect the integrity of the emergency hotline by using it only for legitimate emergencies.
“Please use Unified 911 responsibly. A prank or unnecessary call can occupy a line that another person may urgently need. If it is a real emergency, call Unified 911 and provide clear and accurate information so responders can act as quickly as possible,” Tuaño added.
The initiative forms part of PRO-6’s continuing community safety and public awareness efforts under what it calls “Responsive, Trusted, and Transformative Policing for a Safer Western Visayas.”
It also supports the Philippine National Police’s “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman” campaign under PNP Chief Police Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr.
PRO-6 said continued coordination with schools and communities is intended to promote responsible use of emergency services and help keep Unified 911 available to people who need immediate assistance.
