BACOLOD CITY — A 36-year-old nurse who was six months pregnant died along with her unborn child after she was hit and run over by two cars while on her way to work in Purok Proper North, Barangay Taloc, Bago City, Negros Occidental on Sunday night.
The victim, identified as “Maria,” was a resident of the barangay and had worked at a rural health unit in Valladolid town for about five years.
Police Lt. Col. Ariel Pico, officer-in-charge of the Bago City Police Station, said the victim was crossing the pedestrian lane when she was initially hit by a multi-purpose vehicle driven by 30-year-old “Philip” of Barangay Cabug at around 9:15 p.m.
The impact threw the victim to the opposite lane, where she was allegedly run over by an oncoming sedan driven by 59-year-old “Salvador” of Pulupandan town.
The woman and her baby, a boy, were declared dead at a hospital, Pico said.
News of the tragic death circulated on social media shortly after the incident.
Pico said it remains unclear how the baby was delivered from the womb, as they are still awaiting medical findings to determine the cause of death.
Philip claimed he did not notice the victim due to the car’s tint and because he was tailing a motorcycle.
In a media interview, Philip said he was on his way home from an outing in Cauayan town when the accident occurred.
He said he tried to avoid the woman but hit her before he could react.
He added that he got out of the vehicle to check on her and attempted to warn other motorists, but failed.
Philip also said the car he used belonged to a friend.
Salvador, for his part, said he was heading home when he failed to see and avoid the victim lying on the road.
Pico said both drivers showed no signs of alcohol influence.
Charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide will be filed against the two drivers, who remain in police custody.
