More than half of the Philippine Press Institute (PPI)’s member community publications have received their share of digital advertising revenue through the PPI News Commons website.
The www.ppinewscommons.net platform, launched prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, is now generating commercial income and supporting local journalism.
During the PPI’s Annual Membership Meeting, News Commons chairperson and re-elected Luzon trustee Joenald Rayos said the platform is “doing good business” while helping sustain community newspapers.
The News Commons aggregates content from PPI members with active websites, made possible through the Institute’s digital transformation efforts in the provinces.
Rayos reported that twenty-eight member publications received revenue shares, with some earning up to PHP 60,000 annually.
“While they cannot rely anymore on print revenues, here’s the News Commons that gives them the instrument and platform to earn to help them survive,” he said.
He emphasized that although not a complete solution, the initiative is a “work in progress” toward a sustainable business model for local news outlets.
The PPI News Commons operates as a separate legal entity from the PPI, which remains a non-stock, non-profit organization.
This digital collaboration aims to strengthen grassroots journalism amid the ongoing economic challenges faced by print media.
The development signals a shift in revenue strategies among regional publications that have been struggling to monetize in the digital age.
The initiative comes as many small newspapers nationwide grapple with rising production costs and declining print circulation.
Through shared digital infrastructure and pooled advertising, PPI hopes to reinforce the viability of independent, community-based reporting.
The News Commons also serves as a centralized platform to boost visibility, traffic, and income for provincial publications adapting to digital-first journalism.
