From an initial homicide case, police have upgraded the complaint to murder against a 40-year-old man who went on a rampage at Aleosan District Hospital in Alimodian, Iloilo.
Capt. Chrysler John Ledesma, chief of Alimodian police, said they filed the case for murder against alias Roy before the Iloilo Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.
Alias Roy, a resident of Barangay Cagay, Leon, Iloilo, allegedly attacked a hospital staff member, a fellow patient and three patient watchers during the incident.
The patient-victim, 80-year-old Lilia of Barangay Ulay Hinablan, Alimodian, died after Roy struck her in the chest with his intravenous (IV) stand.
Roy, who had been confined on Oct. 19 after an alleged suicide attempt, was supposed to be discharged on the day of the incident.
At around 6 p.m. on Oct. 21, witnesses said Roy came out of his private room holding his IV stand.
He then allegedly assaulted alias Patricia, a nurse assigned to Station 3, by striking her on the back, head and right arms.
Patricia, 24, of Barangay San Jose, San Miguel, Iloilo, sustained multiple abrasions.
Roy then ran down the hospital hallway and struck a 48-year-old watcher, Marjorie of Barangay Ulay Hinablan, Alimodian, hitting her on the left side of her head.
He went on to attack alias John, 23, of Barangay 8, San Roque North, San Miguel, by punching him on the forehead and lower right arm.
John sustained minor injuries.
Roy also struck Frederico, 62, a watcher from Barangay Sta. Cruz, San Miguel, hitting him on the thumb.
The most serious injury was inflicted on Lilia, who later died.
Ledesma said Roy and Frederico have signified their intention not to pursue charges, citing that they sustained only minor injuries.
Marjorie, who was confined at Healthway Qualimed Hospital in Iloilo City, and Patricia are expected to file separate complaints for physical injuries against the suspect.
Ledesma added that it will be up to the suspect to use his alleged mental illness as a defense.
