BACOLOD CITY – Authorities seized 259 bales of imported used clothing and apparel, or “ukay-ukay,” valued at PHP2.6 million during a raid in Barangay Paniabonan, Mabinay, Negros Oriental, on July 24.
The operation was conducted by the Provincial Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in coordination with the Maritime Police in Dumaguete City.
The team served a search warrant for violation of Republic Act 4653, which prohibits the commercial importation of used clothing and rags in the interest of public health and national dignity.
A woman identified only as “Marissa” was arrested during the operation.
The suspect was allegedly in possession of the items without the necessary permits and in violation of RA 4653, according to a CIDG report.
She will be charged before the National Prosecution Service for the illegal sale and distribution of imported used clothing.
The CIDG reminded the public that purchasing used clothing may pose health and hygiene risks.
Police Brig. Gen. Romeo Macapaz, acting CIDG director, assured the public of their unwavering commitment to law enforcement.
“We are relentless in our fight against all crimes and violations of the law,” Macapaz said.
He also encouraged citizens to report illegal “ukay-ukay” activities and other unlawful operations in their communities.
