ILOILO CITY – Motorists traveling along the Leganes-Sta. Barbara Road in Iloilo can expect safer and smoother travel once the ongoing PHP 33.122 million road reconstruction project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is completed.
The project supports President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to strengthen local connectivity through the construction and improvement of efficient road networks.
Implemented by the DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office, the project is funded under the fiscal year 2026 General Appropriations Act (GAA).
It involves the reconstruction of an 872-meter, two-lane road section using Portland cement concrete pavement (PCCP) in Barangay San Vicente, Leganes, and Barangay Agutayan, Santa Barbara.
The project also includes the construction of a drainage system, concrete shoulders and sidewalks to improve road safety and accessibility.
Citing the report of officer-in-charge District Engineer Perla S. Laguardia, DPWH-6 Regional Director Denise Maria M. Ayag said the reconstruction is necessary to restore the deteriorating road and ensure a smoother travel experience for motorists.
“The existing pavement is already dilapidated; hence reconstruction is needed to ensure the integrity and efficiency of the road, and to provide our road users with a safe and convenient transportation access,” Ayag explained.
Ayag added that the improved road would benefit both motorists and residents of nearby communities by providing safer and more efficient transportation.
“This road section is one of the alternate routes from Iloilo City to Iloilo International Airport, thus this road reconstruction is significant in providing faster access to the airport, boosting tourism development,” Ayag noted.
The Leganes-Sta. Barbara Road serves as an alternative route to Iloilo International Airport, providing motorists with another travel option between Iloilo City and the airport in Cabatuan.
Improving the road is expected to enhance mobility, facilitate the movement of goods and support economic activities in communities along the route.
Meanwhile, Laguardia said the road provides direct access to the town proper, making its reconstruction particularly beneficial to farmers and agricultural traders.
The improved road is expected to facilitate the faster and more cost-efficient delivery of agricultural products from farms to markets.
“This road section passes along various residential communities and commercial/industrial establishments; thus, this reconstruction effort will allow smooth travel of people and cost-efficient transport of goods and services,” Laguardia stressed.
“This will likewise offer safer and convenient access among students and workers, as well as local business owners, hence enhancing socio-economic development,” Laguardia added.
The project forms part of the DPWH’s continuing efforts to maintain and improve the country’s road infrastructure, ensuring that major and secondary routes remain accessible and safe for motorists and commuters.
Once completed, the reconstructed road is expected to improve daily travel, strengthen access to commercial and agricultural centers, and provide more reliable transportation links between communities in central Iloilo. (DPWH)
