The Philippines’ Dota 2 squad successfully made it to the main event of the inaugural Esports Nations Cup after an impressive campaign during the Southeast Asia and Oceania qualifiers on July 1, 2026.
Led by Eljohn “Akashi” Andales, Mc Nicholson “Mac” Villanueva, Mark Jubert “Shanks” Redira, Glenard “Rupido” Rugay, and Bryle “cml” Alvizo, the Pinoy team formally qualified for the prestigious tournament’s main event after an undefeated run in the upper bracket.
To secure a ticket to the qualifying match, Team PHL handed Myanmar a demolition exhibition, sweeping the team, 2-0, in the upper bracket semifinals.
PHL then moved a series away from claiming the ticket, setting up a highly anticipated upper bracket final duel against Thailand.
Thailand was indeed PHL’s toughest opponent, as the team was composed of veteran pro players Nuengnara “23savage” Teeramahanon, Anucha “Jabz” Jirawong, and Worawit “Q” Mekchai.
Despite the star-studded lineup, PHL got off to a hot start, drawing first blood in the series behind Akashi’s Terrorblade pick and Mac’s slippery Night Stalker.
Down to a 50-50 encounter in the last clash of Game 1, PHL was able to pull off the victory through an unexpected siege in Thailand’s ancient neutral creep camp.
However, Thailand had a quick answer in Game 2, stomping PHL with a lopsided performance to equalize the upper bracket finals at 1-all.
The deciding Game 3 was a nip-and-tuck affair at first, but once Akashi’s Luna picked up his Aghanim’s Scepter, Team PHL’s snowball started to take effect.
In the final 18 minutes of the game, PHL grouped up to take towers, pushed the side lanes, and capitalized on its high-ground advantage.
The Esports Nations Cup tournament was organized by the Esports World Cup Foundation and governed by the Esports Foundation.
Team PHL will undergo a four-month intensive training boot camp, as the main event tournament proper will begin on Nov. 2, 2026, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
