SURAKARTA, INDONESIA—The Philippine men’s national football team (PMNFT) made history with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Indonesia, securing a spot in the semifinals of the 2024 ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup.
This marks the Philippines’ first semifinal appearance since 2018 and its first win against Indonesia on their home soil since 2014.
Bjorn Kristensen scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute, converting a penalty after an Indonesian handball in the box. The penalty followed relentless Indonesian attacks, including three shots on target from Marcelino Ferdinan, which were saved by substitute goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad.
The Indonesian side was down to 10 men for much of the match after captain Muhammad Ferrari received a red card for an elbow on Amani Aguinaldo in the 43rd minute.
“I’m so happy for them—they worked very hard to make this classification happen,” said PMNFT head coach Albert Capellas. “Now we are here, we will try to do our best to reach the finals.”
Capellas praised the team for persevering through four games in nine days, culminating in this historic win.
The victory also holds personal significance for veterans like Amani Aguinaldo, who played in the 2018 squad.
“This is very emotional for us. There are no words,” Aguinaldo said. “I think us as a team, we created our luck today, and this is something the country has been needing for a long time.”
Goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad, who stepped up after an early injury to Patrick Deyto, was named Man of the Match. Kammeraad made several crucial saves, including one during 14 minutes of added time to deny Indonesia a last-minute equalizer.
“This means everything,” Kammeraad said. “I’m pretty sure Rizal [Memorial Stadium] will be jam-packed. Everybody will be in line for tickets. We hope to give them a nice Christmas gift.”
The team’s semifinal opponent is defending champion Thailand, with the first leg scheduled for December 27 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila and the second leg on December 30 in Bangkok.
“We need full stadium support,” Capellas urged. “I would love to see the fullest stadium. I think the players deserve the support of the Filipinos.”
Veteran forward Patrick Reichelt, who played his last match for the national team against Indonesia, expressed optimism for the squad’s future.
“This group of boys, this new generation—it’s time to make history,” Reichelt said in an interview with ABS-CBN.com. “I hope we can wake up the Philippines and have a big impact on Philippine football.”
Reichelt’s exit comes as he prepares to welcome his first child in Malaysia. He remains hopeful for the team’s success and pledged to cheer them on from afar.
The team’s return to the semifinals is being celebrated as a significant moment for Philippine football, reminiscent of the 2010 “Miracle in Hanoi,” which marked the sport’s rise in local popularity.
“I just have a special feeling about this group now,” Reichelt said. “I hope we can inspire the next generation and take Philippine football to the next level.”
The Azkals’ journey to the semifinals has reignited hope for the sport’s growth in the country, with players and fans eager to see the team make more history.
