SURAKARTA, Indonesia – The Philippine Men’s National Football Team (PMNFT) secured a thrilling 1-0 victory over Indonesia to advance to the semifinals of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup for the first time since 2018.
Bjørn Kristensen’s decisive penalty in the 63rd minute propelled the PMNFT to second place in Group B with six points, behind group leaders Vietnam, who earned 10 points. The victory ended a six-year semifinal drought and marked the Philippines’ first win over Indonesia in the tournament since 2014.
A crucial moment came when VAR confirmed a handball by Indonesia’s Marselino Ferdinan, setting the stage for Kristensen’s fourth international goal in just nine appearances. The penalty conversion silenced the boisterous 70,000-strong crowd at Manahan Stadium.
“This was an incredible effort,” said head coach Albert Capellas. “The players were tired, but they showed resilience. We’ve finally been rewarded for our hard work.”
The journey to the semifinals was anything but smooth for the Philippines. The team faced a grueling schedule, flying from Manila to Jakarta after their draw with Vietnam and enduring a 500-kilometer road trip to Surakarta.
Despite limited rest and preparation, the PMNFT held firm against a young but formidable Indonesian squad.
Forward Alex Monis praised the team’s determination, saying, “We’ve learned from our mistakes. Today, we kept the lead and fought until the end.”
Adding to Indonesia’s woes, defender Muhammad Ferarri was sent off in the 42nd minute after a foul on Philippine captain Amani Aguinaldo.
A Semifinal Clash with Thailand
The Philippines will face defending champions Thailand in a two-leg semifinal series starting December 27 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
The second leg will be held December 30 at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok.
Thailand, unbeaten in Group A, poses a significant challenge, but the PMNFT is brimming with confidence.
“We respect Thailand, but we’re not afraid,” Monis said. “We’ve shown we can compete against strong teams like Vietnam and Indonesia.”
Veteran forward Patrick Reichelt, who will miss the semifinals due to personal commitments, expressed faith in his teammates. “This team can make history. I believe in them to achieve something special.”
Capellas called on Filipino fans to pack the stadium for the semifinal.
“The players deserve the support of the nation,” he said. “They’ve done their job, and now it’s time for us all to continue this journey together.”
For Reichelt, the campaign signals a turning point: “It’s time for Philippine football to rise again. I hope this inspires the next generation and creates lasting impact.”
