BACOLOD CITY — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has urged residents, particularly in areas affected by the Kanlaon Volcano eruption, to prepare for possible lahar flows due to rains brought by Tropical Storm Querubin.
On December 18, PHIVOLCS issued an advisory warning about the potential for lahar flow triggered by heavy rainfall associated with the storm.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that the interaction between the shear line and Tropical Storm Querubin is expected to bring significant rainfall to Western Visayas and the Negros Island Region.
Authorities and the public have been advised to closely monitor the weather, as continuous heavy rainfall may trigger lahar flows or muddy water flows in low-lying areas near Kanlaon.
PHIVOLCS explained that the rains could mobilize pyroclastic density currents (PDC) and volcanic materials, such as ash and rocks, deposited during Kanlaon’s December 9 eruption.
Areas identified as susceptible to lahar flow include Tamburong Creek in Biak-na-Bato, Baji-Baji Falls, and Talaptapan Creek in Cabacungan, La Castellana.
PHIVOLCS assured the public that it continues to monitor Kanlaon’s activity and will provide timely updates.
