Philippines bows to Malaysia, misses ASEAN semifinals

The Philippines ended its 2026 ASEAN Championship campaign with a 1-0 loss to Malaysia in its final Group B match Saturday at Kuala Lumpur Stadium.

The Philippine men’s national football team entered the match on the brink of elimination and needed a convincing victory over Malaysia to have a chance of advancing to the semifinals.

Those hopes faded in the 16th minute when G. Pavithran, also identified as Pavithran Gunalan, headed home his first international goal to put the hosts ahead.

Wan Kuzain delivered the cross that Pavithran directed past Philippine goalkeeper Patrick Deyto for the match’s only goal.

The Filipinos threatened to equalize when Javi Gayoso narrowly missed with a header.

Javier Mariona also tested Malaysia goalkeeper Azri Ghani, who made the save in the 34th minute.

Malaysia controlled 59% of possession against the Philippines’ 41% and held a 3-1 advantage in blocked shots.

The Malaysian defense contained the Philippines until the final whistle, allowing the hosts to secure their place in the knockout stage.

The Philippines finished fourth in Group B with three points from one victory and three defeats.

Its lone win was a 4-1 result against Laos, while its other losses came against Myanmar, 4-1, and Thailand, 1-0.

The early exit marked a disappointing reversal for the Philippines after reaching the ASEAN Championship semifinals two years ago.

Thailand topped Group B after winning all four matches, while Malaysia finished second with three victories and one loss.

Singapore will face Thailand in the semifinals, while Malaysia will meet Vietnam for the other championship-round berth.
