Police are investigating personal grudges as a possible motive in the killing of a 59-year-old man who was shot while sleeping inside his sister’s home in Passi City, Iloilo, shortly after midnight July 9.
Lt. Col. German Magbanua III, Passi City police chief, said the victim, identified only as alias Jerry, might have made an enemy while working in Pavia.
Investigators are also looking into whether the victim had a conflict with someone in his community.
Magbanua said police were checking barangay and police records in Passi City and Pavia to determine whether complaints had previously been filed against the victim.
Police records showed that Jerry had been detained in San Miguel, Iloilo, in August 2025 over a slight physical injuries case.
Jerry was sleeping on the lanai of his younger sister’s house in Barangay Cabunga when the shooting occurred.
His sister, identified only as Nene, said she and her husband were asleep in their room when their son, John, awakened them.
John, who had been sleeping with a sibling in an adjacent room, told his parents that he had heard what sounded like a gunshot.
He asked them to take cover while he checked on his uncle.
John later told his parents that Jerry appeared to have been shot in the abdomen.
Nene then asked her son to contact their cousin, a barangay council member, and report the shooting to police.
Personnel of the Passi City Police Station recovered a spent cartridge from a 12-gauge shotgun outside the residence.
Responders from the Passi City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office examined Jerry and confirmed his death.
Magbanua said investigators had yet to identify a person of interest or establish a definitive motive.
The victim’s family said they were unaware that he had any enemies.
Jerry had returned to Passi City about a month before the shooting after previously working in Pavia.
Initial reports also said the victim was believed to have died immediately after the attack.
