BACOLOD City – Persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) find other means to support their needs and their families through canvas painting while inside the Metro Bacolod District Jail (MBDJ)-female dormitory here.
Inspector Lorelie Dimaculangan, MBDJ jail warden, said canvas painting is one of the livelihood projects allowed for the PDLs in the facility.
It was in July 2020 until they were able to sell some paintings and accepted labor work to paint various designs on bags, she added.
Dimaculangan said four PDLs were into painting while two others were more into blending of colors.
She said they can sell for P650-750 a 16×16 inches framed painting. However, the price can reach up to P900 for other sizes depending on the subject.
“We started small, but we have lots of reservations now from outside clients,” she said.
She said through this project, PDLs can also improve their love for art and display their artistic side and creativity.
They were able to sell four paintings worth P3,200, she said.
They continue to make more paintings upon the client’s reservation of their artwork posted through the official Facebook page of the jail – Metrobacolodistrictjail Femaledorm.
