Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao has confirmed his return to professional boxing at age 46, announcing a WBC welterweight title bout against reigning champion Mario Barrios on July 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
“I’m back,” Pacquiao declared on social media Wednesday. “On July 19, I return to the ring to face WBC Welterweight Champion Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Let’s make history!”
Pacquiao, who last fought in August 2021, losing to Yordenis Ugas, holds a professional record of 62 wins (39 by knockout), 8 losses, and 2 draws. He is the only boxer to have won world titles in eight different weight divisions. His return comes just weeks before his scheduled induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June.
Barrios, 30, boasts a record of 29 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw, with 18 knockouts. He became the full WBC welterweight champion in June 2024 after Terence Crawford was designated as “champion in recess.” Barrios retained his title in November with a split draw against Abel Ramos.
Pacquiao has reunited with longtime trainer Freddie Roach at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles. His training camp has included sessions with his 24-year-old son, Jimuel, who is expected to make his professional debut on the undercard of the July 19 event.
While Pacquiao’s comeback has generated excitement among fans, it has also sparked debate within the boxing community. Some critics question the WBC’s decision to sanction a title fight for a boxer who has been inactive for nearly four years. However, WBC rules allow a former champion to request a title fight upon returning from retirement.
The bout will be available via pay-per-view on Amazon Prime Video. Ticket information and pricing details are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Pacquiao’s return to the ring adds another chapter to his storied career, as he aims to reclaim a world title and further cement his legacy in the sport.
