A 59-year-old father who allegedly killed his son was released from incarceration after their family refused to file criminal charges.
Captain Alwin Salmon, Janiuay police chief, said they let 59-year-old Hernane Ojanola out of jail at 9:30 a.m. Friday after the reglementary detention period lapsed.
“The family has yet to decide if they would pursue a case against the suspect. But they intimated that they aren’t likely to run after Hernane,” Salmon said.
Hernane was accused of killing his own son, 29-year-old Jayson Ojanola, at 8:05 p.m. on July 5 at their home in Barangay Tamuan, Janiuay, Iloilo.
According to reports, Jayson and Hernane went on a drinking spree Wednesday evening.
Hernane decided to go to sleep but Jayson teased him by waking him up.
Jayson’s mother cautioned him against annoying his sleeping father.
At one point, Hernane woke up and went to their kitchen to get a knife. He returned to sleep with the knife next to him.
But it didn’t take long for Jayson to again agitate his father by waking him up.
Enraged, Hernane quickly got ahold of his knife and stabbed Jayson in the lower left portion of his chest.
Jayson was rushed to Federico Roman Tirador Sr. Memorial District Hospital but died at around 9:09 p.m.
Salmon said it appeared that it wasn’t the first time the victim made fun of his father.
At some point, Hernane claimed that he felt disrespected. But he said he did not intend to kill his son.
