After winning their first NBA championship title, the Oklahoma City Thunder prioritized the paperwork for their young superstars and gifted Chet Holmgren with a five-year, $239 million rookie extension announced on July 9, 2025.
Signing Holmgren to the rookie max extension contract would keep him until 2030, making him the second OKC player to secure the long-term deal aside from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who agreed to a four-year, $285 million supermax deal last week.
Despite only playing 32 games in the regular season due to a hip injury, Holmgren balled out when it mattered the most as he anchored the OKC defense during their playoff run.
He was vital during their series-clinching win in Game 7 of the NBA Finals after locking up their interior in the fourth quarter where he held the Indiana Pacers scoreless in almost five minutes in the final frame.
His presence in the interior proved to be the difference in the final 12 minutes of the ball game, backstopping SGA’s massive offensive performance with a two-way brilliance.
Holmgren finished Game 7 with 18 points, eight rebounds, five blocks, and a steal, capping off his playoff campaign with an average of 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks from the first round.
The lanky center joined a youthful core in Oklahoma at just 23 years old. One of the youngest squads to ever win a championship title is impressive, and the Thunder management is all in on Holmgren and SGA as the main front acts for their bright future.
After the two superstars, Oklahoma will most likely seal the pen and the pad with Jaylen Williams, the team’s stabilizer and second-best scorer, in the upcoming weeks.
Holmgren became the second player this week to receive a rookie max extension, joining Paolo Banchero of the Orlando Magic.
