LA CASTELLANA, Negros Occidental — The Office of Civil Defense in the Negros Island Region (OCD-NIR) has recommended the relocation of nine households in Sitio Tamburong, Barangay Biaknabato, due to increased flooding and erosion risks along Ibod Creek.
OCD-NIR Director Donato Sermeno III told reporters Monday that volcanic sediments from Mount Kanlaon have altered the creek’s flow, diverting water and debris into nearby residential areas.
He said one vacant house has already been filled with debris, while another has partially sunk after erosion weakened its foundation.
“Sediment buildup has shifted the creek’s course, resulting in repeated flooding and debris intrusion during heavy rains,” Sermeno said.
Residents, who have experienced repeated evacuations during monsoon seasons, have expressed willingness to relocate.
OCD is working with local government units to identify permanent and safer resettlement sites.
Sermeno warned that more families may eventually need to be relocated as ground subsidence and flooding worsen.
“We must act proactively to prevent loss of life and property,” he stressed.
Local officials are finalizing relocation sites, with funding and logistics currently being arranged.
The provincial government has been urged to prioritize the relocation project as part of its climate disaster preparedness efforts.
