SAN JUAN CITY — Nxled and Farm Fresh brace for a potentially down-to-the-wire showdown as the two unbeaten squads collide in a marquee clash expected to test their firepower, defensive resolve and championship credentials in the PVL All-Filipino Conference Siklab Series on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Playtime Filoil Centre.
Both coming off straight-set victories, the Chameleons and Foxies are out to seize an early share of the lead with the Choco Mucho Flying Titans.
More importantly, they hope to gain a psychological edge in a new series where every victory could prove crucial in the race for the semifinals and, ultimately, the championship.
Game time is set for 1 p.m., kicking off another intriguing three-match bill that also features a Spikers’ Turf showdown between Alpha Insurance and Far Eastern University-DN Steel at 3:30 p.m.
Creamline then shoots for a second straight victory against Galeries Tower at 6 p.m.
Farm Fresh opened its campaign with a 25-23, 25-22, 25-15 sweep of Galeries Tower, overcoming early challenges before pulling away behind a potent blend of seasoned campaigners and emerging stars.
Led by veterans Royse Tubino, Mylene Rezanova, Riri Meneses, Ara Galang and Ces Molina, along with league MVP Trisha Tubu, the Foxies displayed the depth and firepower that could make them a formidable contender in the season-opening conference organized by Sports Vision.
But their next assignment presents a different challenge in Nxled, which made an equally emphatic statement by sweeping two-time league champion PLDT, 25-16, 25-20, 25-18, last Tuesday.
Under coach Ettore Guidetti, the Chameleons finally showcased the combination of talent, discipline and defensive tenacity he has been seeking from a squad built around the core of the champion Petro Gazz team.
Nxled’s balanced attack and solid floor and net defense stifled the High Speed Hitters, disrupting their offensive rhythm and underscoring the Chameleons’ potential to contend for a breakthrough title.
“Well, as usual, I have to admit that Sir Chris (Tiu) has really given me a great gift, and a great gift is to have an incredible amount of very good players. So the role of the all-to-play, all-to-start can also be a very good weapon for us because, besides the player that I’m putting on the court, all of them are great players,” said Guidetti.
“It was not simple to lead facing the PLDT first, starting six in the second set. And so they’ve done an incredible job for us. After that, it was very simple to drive the game through the strategy that we were figuring out,” he added.
Brooke Van Sickle, still working her way back to peak form following a minor shoulder injury, led the charge with 11 points.
But the bigger takeaway was the team’s depth, with five other players scoring at least six points each — a welcome development for a squad determined to establish itself among the conference’s top contenders.
That balance could prove decisive against a Farm Fresh side equally capable of unleashing multiple offensive threats.
With both teams boasting firepower and defensive muscle, the showdown shapes up as a test of execution, composure and consistency, with neither side likely to give much ground.
The Foxies will look to sustain the momentum of their opening win, while the Chameleons aim to prove that their dismantling of PLDT was no fluke.
The result could provide an early measure of their respective title aspirations, although both teams know that a strong start must be backed by sustained performance in the single-round-robin tournament.
Creamline, meanwhile, seeks to build on its impressive opening-day performance when it faces Galeries Tower in the main game.
The 11-time champions swept the Akari Chargers in one hour and 27 minutes during the league’s opening games in Cebu last week, with Jema Galanza leading a veteran-laden squad eager to remain in contention amid the growing depth of the field.
The Cool Smashers’ experience, offensive versatility and championship pedigree make them a formidable hurdle for the Highrisers, who are still searching for the right combination after their loss to the Foxies.
Galeries Tower, however, has little to lose and much to gain.
The Highrisers will look to regroup, capitalize on any lapses by the fancied Cool Smashers and break into the win column in a tournament where every result carries significant weight in the battle for semifinal berths.
Meanwhile, Alpha Insurance hopes to ride the momentum of its stirring five-set escape against favored Savouge in Cebu when it takes on FEU-DN Steel at 3:30 p.m. in the Spikers’ Turf.
Another victory would propel the Protectors past the Criss Cross King Crunchers and ClearSkiin UV Smashers for the early solo lead.
FEU, however, brings youthful energy and a power-oriented game into its debut, with the Tams eager to make an immediate impression in the men’s competition and disrupt Alpha Insurance’s winning run.
