BACOLOD CITY – The New People’s Army (NPA) has claimed responsibility for the killing of a 40-year-old farmer in Barangay Lag-it, Tayasan, Negros Oriental, on Tuesday.
Police Lt. Stephen Polinar, spokesperson for the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NORPPO), said the victim, identified only as “Tata,” was shot by four unidentified armed men who stormed his home.
Recovered from the crime scene was a spent 5.56mm cartridge case.
In a statement, the Romeo Nanta Command–NPA alleged that the victim was a military asset.
Polinar said authorities are still backtracking the victim’s activities, as he could not yet be directly linked to the military or any rebel group.
He added that coordination with the Philippine Army is ongoing to verify the NPA’s claim.
Polinar also noted that the NPA previously claimed responsibility for another killing in Guihulngan City a few months ago, with the Tayasan incident being the latest.
