And the rumors were true.
Almost a month ago, when the New York Knicks decided to fire Tom Thibodeau despite bringing the franchise back to the Eastern Conference Finals, a short list of possible replacement head coaches named Mike Brown as the best candidate to take over the mentoring post.
On July 2, 2025, ESPN’s senior NBA insider Shams Charania announced that New York is expected to hire the two-time NBA Coach of the Year, but the contract and terms are yet to be disclosed.
Initially, New York had four first choices: Jason Kidd, Chris Finch, Billy Donovan, and Ime Udoka, but the coaches’ mother franchises all rejected the Knicks’ request to conduct negotiation as all of them are still under contract with Dallas, Minnesota, Chicago, and Houston, respectively.
Brown, on the other hand, is yet to find a new team after the Sacramento Kings fired him on December 28, 2024, with only 31 games into the NBA regular season.
Despite helping Sacramento end their 16-year NBA Playoff drought, Brown still faced an unexpected turn of events which resulted in his exit.
With a vast experience and knowledge after working side-by-side with the Golden State Warriors as their assistant coach from 2016-2022, Brown emulated the run-and-gun system that fitted well to their young core of De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, Domantas Sabonis, Kevin Huerter, and Keegan Murray.
Brown will now seek to incorporate the high-octane offensive philosophy once he gets in touch with the Knicks’ orange and white designed coaching board in the facility.
Under Thibodeau, New York relied on Jalen Brunson’s scoring prowess while also running some post sets to Karl Anthony-Towns and OG Anunoby.
However, during the Eastern Conference Finals, New York’s defensive lapses were capitalized by Rick Carlisle and the Indiana Pacers, who marched to the NBA Finals.
The majority didn’t expect the Pacers to run down New York in a convincing fashion, but it was also an eye-opener for the Knicks management to add more pieces to their perimeter defensive rotation.
Also, Thibodeau’s tenure was shaded by how he rotated his players’ minutes and became the top team in the postseason that least used the services of their bench mob.
Fatigue kicked in for the iron men of the East, as Josh Hart was relegated to the bench at the start of Game 3. According to New York, that was to manage his minutes and keep him fresh in the fourth quarter.
On the other hand, Brown was lauded for his quick player in and outs, especially in his time with Sacramento where he helped blossom some of the players’ true potential, including the duo of Fox and Sabonis.
Can Brown help turn around things in New York and boost their hopes of another strong playoff campaign?
