New roads boost farm access in Iloilo

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Iloilo 2nd District Engineering Office has made strides in agricultural and logistical connectivity with the construction of several farm-to-market (FMR) and farm-to-mill roads.

Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel emphasized the importance of these projects.

“By improving connectivity and accessibility, we ensure smoother travel for commuters and logistics solutions, and provide a significant boost to our local farmers and industries,” he said.

Key projects include a ₱9.7 million investment in Barangay Cabilauna, Barotac Nuevo, for an 894-lineal-meter road from Bolilao to Cabilauan, and an ₱11.9 million project in Sitio Magapa, Barangay Monte Magapa, Janiuay, which features an 873-lineal-meter road complete with lined canal and grouted riprap.

Additionally, a ₱24 million project spans 2091 lineal meters from Sitio Proper to Sitio Compound in Barangay Jaguimitan, Passi City, aimed at facilitating efficient farm-to-mill transportation.

In Barangay San Juan Crisostomo, Anilao, a 993-lineal-meter FMR costing ₱11.7 million has been constructed, complete with cross drainage and slope protection.

District Engineer Allan Rey R. Pajimna highlighted the positive impact on the agricultural sector, particularly for sugarcane planters.

“Reducing travel time and ensuring seamless transportation routes will undoubtedly benefit our local farmers, facilitating the efficient transportation of produce to markets and mills,” he added.

These initiatives underscore DPWH’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure to support agricultural growth and economic prosperity in the region, paving the way for sustainable development and improved livelihoods for local communities. (DPWH-6)
