PANAY, Capiz — This town has a new vice mayor following the untimely death of Vice Mayor Julius Asis, 45, of Poblacion Tabuc Panay on Jan. 31, 2026.
Councilor Paolo Besa, the top-ranking Sangguniang Bayan member, officially took his oath of office Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 3, 2026.
Under the Local Government Code of 1991, or Republic Act 7160, the highest-ranking member of the municipal council assumes the role of vice mayor in case of death or permanent incapacity to prevent a leadership vacuum and ensure the continuity of basic services.
Asis’ ashes arrived at his residence recently after being cremated in Iloilo City. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
The position vacated by Besa will be filled after Asis’ burial, which is scheduled for Feb. 9, 2026.
A necrological service will be held at the Panay municipal hall before the interment.
Paolo Besa is the son of incumbent Panay Mayor Jonathan “Sonny” Besa.
