The residents of Barangay Samlague in Leon, Iloilo, now have a versatile venue for various community activities, thanks to a new covered court constructed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Completed by the DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office, the ₱4.941-million project includes a 16.5-square-meter, 13-column covered gymnasium. The construction involved earthworks, reinforcing steel, and structural concrete.
DPWH Region 6 Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel highlighted the significance of the project, noting that it will contribute to the community’s economic growth and development while providing crucial shelter during emergencies and disasters.
“This covered court will serve as a community center where people of all ages and skill levels can enjoy various activities and amenities aimed at enhancing learning and enjoyment,” Oropel said.
He added that the structure will provide a more convenient venue for social, religious, political, health, and recreational activities in the barangay.
District Engineer Mario G. Soriano emphasized that the gymnasium will not only support fitness, social, and political activities but also serve as a vital resource during calamities.
“This covered gym may serve as a temporary evacuation center during calamities and disasters, particularly for families vulnerable to landslides and other risks,” Soriano stressed.
Located in a remote area, the gymnasium may also function as temporary storage for crops and agricultural products during harvest season.
“In addition to being a venue for social gatherings and barangay affairs, these structures may also serve as temporary post-harvest facilities where farmers can store their crops and other agricultural products for safekeeping,” Soriano further explained.
Beyond providing quality roads, bridges, and flood control structures, the DPWH also undertakes significant infrastructure projects like multi-purpose buildings to enhance public facilities and safety for local communities.
