Netflix has unveiled the official teaser trailer and additional cast for Last Samurai Standing, its upcoming Japanese battle royale epic set to premiere globally on November 13, 2025.
The six-episode series, inspired by Shogo Imamura’s Ikusagami novels, combines visceral action and historical drama in a survival game where 292 warriors fight to the death for a massive prize.
Set in the Meiji era, the story follows Shujiro Saga, played by lead actor and producer Junichi Okada, who joins hundreds of fighters at Kyoto’s Tenryuji Temple for a life-or-death mission to Tokyo.
Armed with only a wooden tag and their skill, participants must eliminate rivals, steal their tags, and race to the capital, where only one can claim victory.
The teaser offers a glimpse into the show’s high-stakes atmosphere and introduces viewers to a cast of fierce, morally complex characters immersed in stylized, large-scale combat.
Filming the Tenryuji Temple sequence alone took multiple days and over 1,000 crew members, with director Michihito Fujii and Okada pushing the limits of practical effects and digital VFX to deliver gripping realism.
The core cast includes Yumia Fujisaka, Kaya Kiyohara, Masahiro Higashide, Shota Sometani, Taichi Saotome, Yuya Endo, Yasushi Fuchikami, Kairi Jo, Takayuki Yamada, Wataru Ichinose, Riho Yoshioka, Kazunari Ninomiya, Hiroshi Tamaki, and Hideaki Ito.
Netflix has now confirmed five new cast members: Gaku Hamada as Superintendent General Toshiyoshi Kawaji, Taiiku Okazaki as swordsman Jinroku Keage, Arata Iura as Home Minister Toshimichi Okubo, Tetsushi Tanaka as communications chief Hisoka Maejima, and Ayumu Nakajima as Shinpei Nagase.
Okada, who also serves as action planner, promised a bold fusion of historical context and entertainment, delivering “a battle royale like no other” to global audiences.
“The production team’s attention to detail—from costumes to combat choreography—sets a new benchmark for Japanese serial dramas,” Netflix noted in its press release.
The series has already drawn international attention, including a screening slot at the 30th Busan International Film Festival, where critics are calling it a potential game-changer for the genre.
Last Samurai Standing will stream exclusively on Netflix starting November 13, 2025.
