BACOLOD CITY – Local officials in Bacolod and Negros Oriental expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, a revered global spiritual leader.
In a statement released Monday, shortly after news of the pope’s death, Bacolod Mayor Alfredo “Albee” Benitez paid tribute to the pontiff, calling his life “a testament to humility, compassion, and unwavering faith.”
“As the first pope from the Global South, he brought the Church closer to the margins—amplifying the voices of the poor, the forgotten, and the suffering,” Benitez said.
“His message of mercy and love resonated across cultures and creeds, reminding us all of the sacred value of human dignity,” he added.
The mayor offered prayers for Pope Francis’ eternal rest and expressed gratitude for his life of service, moral courage, and spiritual leadership.
“May his memory inspire us to lead lives marked by justice, compassion, and peace,” Benitez said.
Bacolod Lone District Rep. Greg Gasataya also released a statement highlighting the pope’s advocacy for the marginalized, his call for peace, and his enduring message of mercy and love.
“Today, we join millions around the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, a spiritual leader whose compassion, humility, and firm stance on equity and diversity left an indelible mark on humanity,” Gasataya said.
Negros Oriental Gov. Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria echoed the grief felt across the province.
“It is with great despair that we learn of the passing of our pope, a loss felt deeply by the Catholic community and the world,” he said.
The Negros Oriental provincial government, in a Facebook post, honored the pope’s legacy of social justice, interfaith dialogue, and environmental stewardship.
“The passing of such a pivotal figure evokes not only grief but also reflection on his enduring impact,” the statement read.
“His teachings on mercy and understanding offer us comfort as we grieve,” it added.
“We are reminded that while we grieve individually, we also share in a collective experience that fosters healing through memories and shared values.”
Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, at age 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.
He had been admitted to a hospital on February 14 after suffering from bronchitis.
He returned to Casa Santa Marta after 38 days to continue his recovery until his death was announced Monday.
