BACOLOD CITY — Local officials in this city and across Negros Occidental praised Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao for his performance in Saturday’s WBC welterweight title fight against Mexican-American Mario Barrios in Las Vegas, which ended in a draw.
Despite the lack of a decisive win, Pacquiao’s grit, heart, and sportsmanship earned widespread admiration from local leaders.
In a statement, Mayor Greg Gasataya said the former senator once again inspired strength, unity, and pride in every Filipino across the globe.
“Though the fight ended in a draw, for us, you remain the victor,” Gasataya said, thanking Bacolod’s adopted son for giving a good fight.
To show support, the city government hosted a free live viewing of the bout at the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC) lobby on Sunday.
Gasataya said Pacquiao stood toe-to-toe with a younger, taller opponent and gave everything he had for the honor of the country.
“We stand with you now and always,” he added, urging Bacolodnons to continue supporting Pacquiao.
Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said Pacquiao remains a champion in the eyes of the Filipino people.
“For us, the Pambansang Kamao remains our champ. At 46, he fought with heart, skill, and unmatched courage,” Lacson said, sharing photos of his past meetings with the boxer during visits to the province.
“He defied the odds and carried the pride of an entire nation,” the governor said, thanking Pacquiao for raising the flag and making Filipinos proud.
Third District Rep. Javier Miguel Benitez recalled meeting Pacquiao for the first time in Las Vegas in May 2011 and later welcoming him to his office in July 2013.
Benitez said he was honored to witness Pacquiao’s return to the ring after four years of retirement.
“Thank you for the pride, inspiration, and legacy you’ve given the Philippines. Ang ating tunay na Pambansang Kamao,” the lawmaker said.
