Negros Island police on full alert for Sept. 21 rallies

BACOLOD CITY – The Police Regional Office–Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) is on full alert status ahead of planned demonstrations marking the anniversary of Martial Law on Sept. 21.

A total of 1,120 police personnel have been deployed across key locations in Negros Occidental, including Bacolod City, as well as in Negros Oriental and Siquijor.

Police Lt. Joem Malong, PRO-NIR spokesperson, said the deployed officers are tasked with fixed visibility posts, mobile and motorcycle patrols, foot patrols, traffic management, civil disturbance management (CDM), reserve standby support forces (RSSF), and drone surveillance operations.

The regional office emphasized its commitment to protecting the public’s right to peaceful assembly while ensuring public safety and order.

“The right to peaceful assembly is a fundamental pillar of our democracy, one that we fully recognize and are sworn to protect,” said Police Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay, PRO-NIR director.

He added that any attempt to incite violence or commit unlawful acts would be addressed firmly and in accordance with the law.

PRO-NIR assured the public that its presence aims to deter disturbances, assist commuters, and minimize the impact of transport strikes or demonstrations.

The agency said it is closely coordinating with local government units, transport groups, and other stakeholders to prevent disruptions and maintain order.

Authorities also called on protesters and demonstrators to observe lawful and peaceful conduct during their activities.

“As always, we will remain vigilant, fair, and ready to protect our communities, preserve peace, and defend the rule of law,” Ibay said.

The public was likewise urged to remain calm, cooperative, and alert during the commemorative events.
