One of the most celebrated collegiate coaches in the NCAA will be making a huge leap to the NBA.
On June 24, 2026, the Dallas Mavericks officially welcomed University of Michigan head coach Dusty May as their new chief tactician, replacing Jason Kidd, who mutually agreed to part ways with the team after a five-year tenure.
“This is one of the most respected franchises in professional sports, with passionate fans, a talented roster, and a clear commitment to building a championship organization,” May said.
This comes after May’s promising run leading the Michigan Wolverines to the 2026 NCAA national championship, when they defeated the University of Connecticut Huskies to secure their first title since 1989.
Despite only eight years of experience as a head coach in the collegiate ranks and no NBA background, the Mavericks took the risk and believed in May’s coaching philosophy.
In his two-year tenure at Michigan, May helped the Wolverines’ basketball squad transform into an elite program, steering the team to a 64-13 win-loss record from 2024 to 2026.
May is popularly known for his high-octane offensive schemes deployed at Michigan, including a free-flowing point of attack centered on the players’ off-ball movement.
The champion coach also showed glimpses of quick in-game adjustments, especially against the Huskies in the NCAA championship game, when he turned around an early deficit using a hybrid defensive mix of a 1-2-2 zone and 1-3-1 coverage.
“He’s somebody who came up really in a tough way, video coordinator, assistant coach, and how he’s developed himself. He’s worked everywhere. He’s coached small and big teams,” Dallas president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri said.
May is looking to turn around a disappointing 2025-26 NBA season for the Mavericks, when they finished 12th in the Western Conference with a 26-56 win-loss record.
Leading the charge for Dallas when the NBA season kicks off this October are former NBA champion Kyrie Irving, Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg, Klay Thompson, Daniel Gafford, Khris Middleton, and PJ Washington.
