Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC) has opened a community dialogue on Manicani Island, Eastern Samar, to address local environmental concerns related to the operations of its subsidiary, Hinatuan Mining Corp. – Manicani Nickel Project (HMC-MNP).
The engagement was led by NAC’s environmental team, composed of in-house foresters, marine biologists, pollution control officers, and mining engineers.
The team met with residents from Barangays Banaag and Hamorawon to answer questions on water safety, pollution control, marine biodiversity, and land rehabilitation.
“We were grateful for the opportunity to talk to the communities on the island,” said Engr. Remy Camo, NAC assistant vice president for environment and safety.
“This activity reaffirmed our commitment to working closely with them,” Camo said.
“We came prepared with clear, factual responses and appreciated the residents’ straightforward questions. Open dialogue is key to mutual trust and environmental stewardship,” he added.
NAC noted that many of the community’s concerns align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
To support these goals, HMC-MNP allocated PHP34 million in 2024 for its Environmental Protection and Enhancement Programs (EPEP).
The budget funds on-the-ground projects aimed at mitigating the environmental impacts of mining activities on the island.
“The visit of the environmental team from the head office and the efforts of our environmental team on-site reflect our dedication to protecting and enhancing the environment in Manicani through responsible mining and ongoing environmental programs,” said Engr. Philip D. Ines, HMC-MNP resident mine manager.
NAC emphasized that environmental protection requires active community participation and pledged to continue engaging with residents through open, science-based discussions.
The initiative is part of the company’s broader Sustainability Roadmap, which integrates environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles across its operations.
