Prof. Moniq M. Muyargas has been appointed as the new Director of the UP Visayas Gender and Development Program effective January 1, 2021, until December 21, 2023.
Muyargas is an Assistant Professor in Psychology of the Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, UP Visayas, and has been teaching psychology and research courses at the undergraduate level.
She also teaches at the Division of Professional Education at the graduate level in the areas of guidance services management, mental health, and social science research. In addition, she has taught Personality Development and Applied Social Sciences among Senior High School students of the UP High School.
Muyargas earned her Master in Psychology degree at the Ateneo de Manila University and finished her undergraduate degree in BA Psychology in UP Visayas. In the Philippines, she is among the handful of academics that specialize in LGBT Psychology.
She is trained to do qualitative research and methodology, particularly on education, gender, sexuality, HIV/AIDS, and LGBT studies.
She is currently the national co-coordinator of the Teaching Psychology Special Interest Group of the Psychological Association of the Philippines and a member of the LGBT Psychology Special Interest Group of the same organization. She is a licensed secondary-level teacher and a proactive advocate of gender equality and empowerment and the LGBTQ community.
During the last two years, she was the faculty-in-charge of the Community Outreach Program – BIDANI, the public service arm of the College of Arts and Sciences, UP Visayas. (Lyncen M. Fernandez with information from Prof. Muyargas)
