BACOLOD City – Mayor Evelio Leonardia, president of the League of Cities, said Wednesday that majority of their group are for the reopening of classes in 2021.
“There is an overwhelming opposition to the opening of the classes this August (2020),” Leonardia said.
He said that they conducted a survey on member-mayors of the LCP “and the sentiment of the majority is for the classes to resume in 2021.”
“The important thing is the health and wellbeing of the schoolchildren,” the mayor said.
“If they go back to school it would be difficult to maintain social distancing because they are children. How can you stop children from being children?”
Leonardia said he himself is for the 2021 resumption of the classes.
“I hope that the authorities will reconsider the August 24 opening of classes in the meantime that the (COVID-19) crisis is raging,” Leonardia said.
He said he believes the Sanggunian Panglungsod and other city officials share his sentiment.
Earlier, Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said he is for the resetting of the classes to 2021.
