BACOLOD City – The local government of San Carlos in Negros Occidental destroyed more than 1,000 motorcycle open pipe mufflers yesterday.
Mayor Renato Gustilo and Police Lieutenant Colonel Jesus Mesahon Jr., city police chief, led the ceremonial mass destruction at the City Hall grounds.
This is in accordance with City Ordinance No. 16-11, “declaring public nuisance motor vehicles that emit exceptionally loud, startling, and annoying noise which tend to affect public health, safety and peace, providing penalties thereto, and for other purposes,” according to the police.
It is also in relation to Republic Act 4136 or the “Land Transportation and Traffic Code.”
Police Captain Ruby Aurita, public information officer of San Carlos City Police Station, said the confiscation of the open pipe mufflers started in 2016. The operation was intensified when the city organized a Law Enforcement Team.
The bulk of the confiscated mufflers were from 2020 to the present, Aurita said.
The activity aims to remind the public to refrain from using illegal open pipe mufflers which may cause noise pollution.
