Michelin Guide to unveil second Philippine restaurant selection

The Philippines’ culinary scene will return to the international spotlight on Oct. 29, 2026, as the Michelin Guide unveils its second restaurant selection for Manila, surrounding areas, and Cebu, recognizing establishments that showcase the country’s evolving food culture.
The Michelin Guide Manila and Environs & Cebu 2027 selection will be announced during an invitation-only ceremony at the Manila Marriott Hotel in Newport World Resorts, marking another milestone in the country’s growing recognition as a destination for exceptional dining.
Beyond the prestige of Michelin stars, the annual selection offers Filipino chefs, independent restaurants, and food entrepreneurs opportunities to attract international attention, strengthen culinary tourism, and introduce regional flavors to a wider audience.
For diners, the guide also provides an independent reference for discovering restaurants that deliver outstanding cooking, including establishments offering quality meals at accessible prices.
The announcement comes one year after the Philippines entered the Michelin Guide in October 2025, becoming part of the international restaurant evaluation system that has helped shape global dining standards for generations.
The inaugural Michelin Guide Manila and Environs & Cebu 2026 recognized 108 establishments, including one restaurant awarded two Michelin stars, eight restaurants receiving one star, 25 Bib Gourmand establishments, and 74 Michelin Selected restaurants.
Helm, a restaurant in Makati led by chef Josh Boutwood, made history as the first Philippine establishment to receive two Michelin stars, while eight other restaurants earned one star each.
The initial selection also highlighted the diversity of Filipino dining, from contemporary interpretations of traditional dishes to family-run restaurants serving familiar regional specialties.
Cebu contributed six Bib Gourmand establishments and 12 Michelin Selected restaurants, bringing additional recognition to the province’s culinary heritage and dining culture.
The 2027 edition is expected to build on that foundation, with Michelin’s anonymous inspectors continuing to explore restaurants that combine technical excellence, culinary creativity, and distinctive local flavors.
In its preview of the upcoming selection, Michelin identified growing confidence among Philippine chefs in presenting regional ingredients and traditional cooking techniques through both contemporary and heritage-inspired dining experiences.
Manila’s restaurant scene continues to feature ambitious chef-driven concepts and tasting menus, while Cebu draws on its reputation for lechon, seafood, charcoal-grilled specialties, and home-style cooking.
The guide’s expanding exploration of Manila and its surrounding areas also reflects increasing interest in regional culinary identities and the restaurants preserving them.
This year’s ceremony carries additional historical significance because 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of the Michelin star rating system.
Introduced in 1926, the Michelin star has become one of the most widely recognized distinctions in international gastronomy, awarded to restaurants demonstrating exceptional culinary standards.
The Michelin Guide recognizes three levels of excellence, with one star signifying high-quality cooking worth a stop, two stars representing excellent cuisine worth a detour, and three stars identifying exceptional cooking worth a special journey.
Although Michelin stars often attract the greatest attention, the guide also recognizes restaurants that demonstrate culinary quality without necessarily belonging to the fine-dining category.
The Bib Gourmand distinction highlights establishments offering good-quality cooking at reasonable prices, making it particularly relevant to diners seeking memorable meals without the expense typically associated with luxury restaurants.
Michelin Selected restaurants, meanwhile, are establishments that satisfy the guide’s standards and are considered worthy of a visit.
These distinctions allow the guide to recognize different expressions of culinary excellence, from elaborate tasting menus to modest dining establishments built around traditional recipes.
Every restaurant included in the selection undergoes independent evaluation by anonymous Michelin Guide inspectors using five universal criteria.
The first examines the quality of ingredients, recognizing the importance of fresh, appropriate, and carefully selected products in preparing exceptional food.
The second evaluates mastery of cooking techniques, including the skill and precision demonstrated in transforming ingredients into finished dishes.
The third considers the harmony of flavors, assessing how individual components work together to create a balanced and satisfying dining experience.
The fourth focuses on the personality of the cuisine, examining whether a restaurant demonstrates a distinct culinary identity through its dishes.
The fifth evaluates consistency, requiring restaurants to maintain their standards across the menu and over time rather than deliver exceptional results only occasionally.
Michelin inspectors conduct their evaluations anonymously, allowing restaurants to be judged according to the quality of their food rather than their reputation or the publicity surrounding their chefs.
The guide’s restaurant ratings focus on culinary performance, with service, decor, and atmosphere not directly determining the awarding of Michelin stars.
The evaluation process also means that previously recognized restaurants must continue demonstrating their standards to retain their distinctions in subsequent editions.
For Philippine restaurants, the recognition carries potential economic benefits extending beyond the dining room.
International visibility can encourage culinary travel, generate interest in local ingredients, and create additional demand for the services of farmers, fishers, food producers, and hospitality workers.
Recognition of traditional and regional cuisines can also encourage restaurants to preserve cooking practices and strengthen relationships with local suppliers.
These opportunities are particularly relevant as Philippine tourism increasingly promotes food as part of the country’s cultural identity and visitor experience.
The second Philippine Michelin ceremony will bring together restaurateurs, chefs, industry leaders, official partners, and media representatives for an evening celebrating culinary excellence.
Invited guests will experience a specially curated selection of food and beverages prepared by Michelin Guide award-winning chefs from the Philippines and abroad.
Although attendance at the Manila Marriott Hotel ceremony is by invitation only, the announcement will be livestreamed through the Michelin Guide Asia YouTube channel, allowing food enthusiasts and industry professionals to follow the results.
The program is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Philippine time on Thursday, Oct. 29.
As the Philippine culinary industry approaches its second Michelin selection, attention will turn to which establishments retain their distinctions, which restaurants earn new recognition, and how the guide’s expanding coverage captures the diversity of Filipino cuisine.
The announcement will offer another opportunity to assess how traditional flavors, contemporary techniques, and a new generation of culinary talent are shaping the Philippines’ place on the international gastronomic map.
