MGEN Unveils Center for Innovation in Visayas

Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN), in partnership with the Meralco Power Academy (MPA), has unveiled the first MGEN Center for Innovation (MCI) — a dedicated hub for learning and research designed to empower communities, build local talents, and prepare future leaders in the power industry.
Located within the Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC) facility in Iloilo City, MCI represents the first MPA facility established outside Meralco franchise – extending the reach of One Meralco’s technical expertise, learning programs, and best practices to Visayas. Moreover, it highlights MGEN’s commitment to inclusive growth and sustainable development through continuous learning and skills development.
“Formerly known as the GBP Institute for Energy, this facility has been reimagined and revitalized to meet the evolving needs of our industry and our communities. Now, MCI will serve a wider audience and aim to become a leading hub for energy education, research and innovation — the first of many Centers for Innovation we plan to establish across our sites in the Philippines,” said MGEN President and CEO Emmanuel V. Rubio.
MCI serves as a bridge between current and emerging capabilities – a hub where ideas are nurtured, and a space to hone the skills of the next energy leaders. What was once an internal training facility will now be opened to the vast network of students and professionals – serving as a home of the best energy practitioners in the Philippines.

Through this facility, MGEN and MPA aim to strengthen regional capabilities in energy innovation, foster technical excellence, and inspire the next generation of energy talents.
For its inaugural run, the MCI hosted the Young Engineers and Scientists Summit (YESS) on 8 October 2025, bringing together promising students from Angelicum School, Leganes National Highschool, and Philippine Science Highschool-Iloilo, for a day of learning, collaboration, and innovation. The summit served as a platform to inspire and cultivate the next generation of engineers and scientists who will shape the future of sustainable energy in the country.
With the launch of MGEN Center for Innovation, MGEN and MPA will continue to champion education and innovation in the energy sector — powering a better tomorrow by developing the minds that will shape it.
